Sports Mental Training
Till some time ago the main focus in sports was physical training. There was no stress on mental training. A visit to a sports psychologist implied that the sportsman was facing a personal problem.
Things have changed today. A team is incomplete without a sports psychologist whose job is to counsel the team members, build mental strength and team spirit. You can now find sports psychologists attached to college teams, professional teams, Olympic athletes, professional golfers, tennis players, etc. There is growing realization that the team that is mentally tougher performs better. The same applies to individual athletes. They acquire the killer instinct once their consultants put them through well-planned mind games. Unlike their opponents, they are able to dig themselves out of holes and go the extra mile to deliver better results.
Mental training has also increased the professional life of a sportsman. Earlier, an athlete used to become mentally fatigued much earlier before he became physically fatigued, and dropped out of the game. Today, the sportsman’s mind refuses to give up, egging the body to produce that extra ounce of energy that can make all the difference between success and failure.
Mental training is especially effective in team sports. It makes the team function as a unit. There are no conflicts in the team. Also, there is no demoralization when a player is benched. There is a new aggressiveness and bonhomie among team members.
However, mental training helps only when the sportsman has the right physical skills. Average sportsmen cannot hope to become world beaters on the strength of mental training alone. They need to have the rights skills, stamina, talent and abilities. Only then will mental training help them scale new heights.
