 Cam Ward

Cameron or Cam Ward, born on February 29th in the year 1984, by profession is an ice hockey goaltender. He plays for Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL) and is Canadian by birth. Cameron’s birth town is Saskatoon. However, he declares the Sherwood Park, Alberta as his hometown. Cam Ward is the first ice hockey goalie to win the Stanley Cup in the rookie campaign in the year 2006. Before that no one won that cup after Patrick Roy, The Hall of Farmer. The last match was won by Roy in the year 1986.

Carolina Hurricanes of NHL in 2002 drafted Cam Ward as 25th in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. During 2001 to 2004 Cam Ward played three full seasons with Red Deer Rebels.  Cam has leaded the Rebels to the WHL finals two times thus creating a very strong and stable position for him in the team. Cam Ward thus moved on from the WHL to play two sessions with the Lowell Lock Monsters. The Lowell Lock Monsters belong to the American Hockey League (AHL).

With the Carolina Hurricanes, Cameron Ward signed a contract for more than a year on the 13th of May, year 2004. During 2005 to 2006 in the session of the NHL, Cam Ward acted mainly as a backup of the Swiss goalie Martin Gerber. The first game that Cameron Ward played as the opener of the season was on October 5th, 2005. Ward played that against Tampa Bay Lightning. Martin Gerber had a bad injury in his hamstring and hence Ward got the chance to play in his place. Cam Ward is a very great player. He saved 10 shots out of 11 on a 5-2 loss. During the next two days Ward played a second game in his team as an opener against Pittsburgh Penguins. Cam Ward went sideways Mario Lemieux, Žigmund Pálffy, and Sidney Crosby. Thus the Hurricanes lead the game by a 3-2 and won. Thus Cam Ward got a lot of praise for his performance. During this rookie season his performance was extremely well. Thus his name got short listed out of 81 candidates to play for Team Canada during the Winter Olympics 2006.

In the year 2006 during the Stanley Cup Playoffs the Carolina Hurricanes was behind by two games in its first round against the Montreal Canadians Previous goalie Martin Gerber was not quite up to the expectations and hence the coach called upon Ward. Cam Ward guided the team to the next round against the New Jersey Devils and defeated Martin Brodeur. This season the team won in seven games. On June 5th in the year 2006, Ward won the Stanley Cup saving 34 shots on goal. He became the first rookie goalie to do such an event after Patrick Roy.

Cam Ward achieved several records that were made last by Patrick Roy in the year 1986.Ward was the first goalie to record a shutout in the Stanley Cup finals during last 20 years. Ward was also the first goalie in 20 years to start a game in the finals. He was even the first rookie to win the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1987. Cam ward was a member of the Canadian IIHF World Championship team. They won gold in a 4 -2, match against Finland and Moscow.
